If you like watches and been in the game for a while, you most likely have heard of Kickstarter and seen a couple of watches proposed on their platform. I know many of you think its a jungle, and I agree. Occasionally you’ll find a brand that have put down a lot of effort and time into their creation, and thats why I’m writing this post. I’ve had the chance to put my hands on the new Swedish brand Rumoe and their new line called Nobel Royal. They are in no way trying to ‘Redifine Luxury’ as many Kickstarter brands are trying to sell, they are more into the ‘Affordable Luxury’- Business. They are now launching four different watches on Kickstarter, and if you’re looking for a price worthy watch, have a look at them!
At first glimpse the Rumoe Nobel Royal looks just like any other dress watch out there, straight-line indicies, bold minute and hour hand and a date window. But thats only at first glimpse, the Nobel Royal actually has beautiful hours/minute hands that catches the light in a perfect way. The twisted lugs reminds me of an Omega, but I actually compared it to my own Omega and the lugs on the Nobel Royal is not as twisted as it is on the Omega, but since I’m a sucker for the lugs thats just a bonus in my book. As mentioned above, the Nobel Royal comes in four different styles, two with Rose Gold plating and two in Stainless Steel, each of which has White/Black Dial, something for everyone basically. They will be sold on Kickstarter in September and the first 100 watches will be sold at $199 USD.
Features of Rumoe Nobel Royal
- Case size: 40mm in diameter and 11.5mm in case thickness.
The case size is in my opinion the perfect size if you want to feed the masses, its without doubt the most popular size worn around the globe. Its a great size for both men and women. I like the fact that the case thickness is only 11.5, although its an automatic movement.
- Movement: Seiko NH35A
- Key futures: 24 Jewels, 21,600 BPH, 41h power reserve , bi-directional winding, hacking.
The NH35 is a reliable workhorse, this movement is one of the worlds most used automatic movements. Many microbrands tend to turn into Miyota 8/9-series but the 8-series lack both hacking and hand-winding ability. The NH35 has both, you will be able to wind it by hand and when the crown is pulled out the time stops so you’re able to accurately set the time, also called hacking.
- Strap and Clasp
Like any dresswatch out there, I’d love a great strap that is comfortable to have around the wrist. Nobel Royal is equipped with a calf leather strap, two of them are plain and two are with crocodile pattern. The straps are very comfortable, a little stiff at the beginning but when it gets to know your wrist, its a great strap! As for the clasp, I’m all in favour for easy to buckle clasps that also add a touch of luxury. All of the Nobel Royal watches are equipped with butterfly-style clasps and that is my favourite thing about the watch.
To summarize this review, we have a microbrand thats up and coming with a great understanding for quality and classic design. The caseback displays a city silhouette of the Capital of Sweden, Stockholm and is engraved centered on the caseback like pictured below.
Judging of the engraving, The Rumoe Nobel Royal appears to have some not inconsiderable historical inspiration. The design shows a King or a General of some kind, sitting on his horse and pointing towards the very famous Church of Knights. This uncommon touch makes it a watch, not only telling time but also a story. Which story, I honestly don´t know but it´s nevertheless a rare attribute for a watch.
Rumoe are now running their pre-campaign and if you’re interested to be noticed upon their release in September, sign up here.
