BaselWorld 2017: The much awaited TAG HEUER AUTAVIA

I guess no one have missed the fact that, the yearly watch fair BaselWorld recently opened their doors. The watch fair of BaselWorld is the peak of events for Haute Horlogerie brands all around the world. Mainly and sadly because of marketing purposes, but it’s still where we all crave for the amazing novelties from our favorite manufacturers.

One of the models I was really excited about is the recently released Autavia model from TAG HEUER. Since the early months of 2017 it has been a lot of speculation and high expectations related to the new reissue of the iconic Tag Heuer Autavia that is loved by the haute horlogerie and the vintage community.

The Autavia model was born from the conjugation of two names related to motor sports, “AUTOMOTIVE” and “AVIATION”, and it was released on 1962 back when Jack Heuer was only a young CEO.

Its for sure the most racing inspired chronograph and the one that truly enhances the real sporting heritage and story. Since the 60’s the Autavia has been using multiple Valjoux variants (mostly the 7734, 72 and the 77). So, now that we know a very small part of its history let’s go straight to the big news!

The new Autavia model comes with the HEUER CALIBRE 02 that has 31.0 mm of diameter, 75 hours of power reserve and a total of 168 components, this said it has only a height of 6,90mm (that’s not a lot for a chronograph).

The dial comes in a classy and cool opaline black color, 3 sub dials amazingly finished in a white spiral effect with black gold hands.

The indexes come filled with the great Super-LumiNova ( I’d love to grab it and go on in a pitch dark room to be stunned by its lumes ).

I’m a guy of habits, I’m used to have 38-40mm watches, that for me is the perfect case diameter, but I really think I would be open to give the Autavia a chance, and in matter of fact I’m almost sure i would love it, it comes with a 42mm diameter case in polished stainless steel, with bi-directional bezel in black aluminium.

Last but not least the Autavia comes with the traditional and beautiful curve sapphire glass with double sided anti-reflective treatment.

You can actually chose between two bracelets, a brown calf leather strap or a 7 link stainless steel bracelet.

I’m really happy about this novelty, it’s always good to have a reissue of such an iconic and loved model, the case shape never looked so good, the dial color is amazing and it combines smoothly with the black bi-directional bezel making it a sporty and classy watch that I could use every single day of the week and twice on Sundays.

What do you think of this reissue? Is it worth the money, or would you rather spend it on the Vintage Autavia?

Let me hear you thoughts in the comment section down below!
